First stage

The birth of graphite: at this time, the "graphite pencil stick" is still in the original stage of only satisfying writing;

In 1564, a black mineral, graphite, was discovered in a place called Barrodale in England. Soon, some local shepherds discovered that graphite could be used to mark sheep. Inspired by this, people cut graphite blocks into small strips for writing and painting. But the graphite strip is easy to dirty hands, and easy to break. In 1761, German chemist Faber solved this problem: he first ground graphite ore into powder and washed it with water to remove impurities to obtain pure graphite powder. Then, he mixed sulfur, antimony, rosin and other substances into graphite powder. Then the mixture was heated and solidified and pressed into the shape of a pen, which was the earliest prototype of a pencil.

Second stage

After a hundred years of development, the "pencil" at this time has entered the initial stage of its own evolution. The emergence of wooden pencil has become a semi-finished product of "pencil". The market is mainly for this kind of pencil. The user needs to cut it again before using it.

From the perspective of 2017, the "pencil" invented by Comte is actually only pencil lead. The task of putting a wooden pole "jacket" on the pencil lead was completed by a carpenter named William Monroe in the United States in 1812. The machine invented by Monroe can cut standardized thin wood strips of 5 to 18cm in length, and can dig a groove in the middle of the thin wood strips that just fits the pencil lead. Put the pencil lead into the groove, and then put the two wooden strips tightly and glued together, which made the first pencil rod in the modern sense. Until 2018, this was still the standard process for manufacturing ordinary pen shafts.

Third stage

The birth of the cap pencil: With the extensive use of pencils, a series of problems of traditional pencil rods have been exposed, bringing people a lot of troubles, such as: unsanitary use, easy to break, difficult to carry, etc., all of which have brought new challenges to the progress and development of the pencil industry, while the emergence of the cap pencil solves the development bottleneck encountered by the modern pencil industry in product innovation.
